US Leaves Behind Europe In Quest For Greener Cars
For the past few decades, it had been commonly observed that the US consumers opted for gas guzzlers like SUVs, pickups and other large vehicles while European customers chose smaller and more fuel efficient cars. However, this trend is changing according to the Automotive News. It reports that the preference of the US consumers are now shifting towards more fuel efficient and environment friendly cars, in contrast to the European origin cars that emit high volumes of CO2 since they are tuned for Autobahn speeds.
An important factor supporting this trend in the USA is the comparative easy availability of refilling stations for alternative vehicles as compared to Europe, as the countries composing the European Union cannot agree on taxation and infrastructure costs in the development of biofuels. While the Union is still devising ways on how to make alternative fuels more readily available across the continent, the US has already made great leaps in this domain.
One main alternative source of energy being used in cars produced and sold in the USA is electricity. Hybrid electric vehicles can now be seen more and more often on the US roads as compared to Europe where such a car is yet to be mass produced. The US car makers along with the Japanese car manufacturers are working hard in the development of such fuel efficient hybrid cars. One concrete example of this is the Toyota Prius. It has fast become the favorite of the
fuel-conscious American motoring public. Car makers are also making great progress in improving the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines. This is to stem the increasing tide of people moving away from automobiles or large SUVs which devour a good deal of gasoline. In addition to all these advances, keeping in mind the comeback and increasing popularity of the diesel engines in the US, bio-diesel is also being developed by different companies for the use of diesel powered vehicles.
Other than that, what makes the US cars cleaner than their European counterparts is the fact that gasoline in the US contains more biofuel additives than vice-versa. This as well as the development of alternative fuels is aimed to curtail the emission of environment damaging greenhouse gases. While current steps being undertaken are not enough to apply the brakes on global
warming, these are the first good steps in both protection as well as preservation of the environment. At the same time, the manufacture of alternative fuels such as bio-diesel and bio-ethanol other than being cleaner and a renewable source of energy also reduce dependency on foreign oil. It also creates more jobs by constructing facilities to produce alternative fuels.
The US has been widely criticized all over the world over the global warming issue but with the introduction of such fuel efficient hybrid cars and even zero emission vehicles in its market, it is delivering on its promise to counter the effects of global warming towards a greener future.
